While the majority of the acoustics on the market are still using a dreadnought body shape, there are more and more brands coming out with smaller bodied models. There is very little consensus on naming schemes for the particular sizes, but this page will include anything with overall dimensions smaller than that of a dreadnought. This includes grand auditorium, concert, folk, parlor, OM, 00, 000, travel guitars, and more. For guitars designed specifically for kids (1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 sized guitars) see our page for "Junior Guitars".
Small bodied acoustics serve many purposes. They are more comfortable to sit with for most average or below average height people. They are more portable and lighter weight than their dreadnought or jumbo counterparts. They mellow out your tone in many cases, giving you less bass a warmer mid-range, and brighter trebles. In many cases, kids who would typically need a 3/4 size guitar can sit comfortably with a small full sized guitar like Sigma's 00 or 000 sized models, giving you the ability to get them into a guitar that sounds and plays better than a 3/4 size option, and that they will never outgrow, making it a better long-term investment.
If you are in the market for a small acoustic and are in our area, be sure to stop by to sit with the different sizes to really see how they fit you. You may be surprised at how big of a difference the body size can make for your comfort level when playing.
