Well over half of our acoustic guitar selection has built in electronics, which is what we class as "Acoustic/Electric". These instruments will all function perfectly in an entirely unplugged setting, using the acoustic properties of the tone-woods and body design to amplify their sound. However, they also all have a pickup of some sort that will allow you to plug into an amplifier or PA system in order to play at much higher volume levels, or modify your tone, record into a DAW or play around with digital effects. Rarely will these systems take away from the tone of the instrument, but they will always give you the ability to play live shows more conveniently, or create sounds that would otherwise be impossible with a standard acoustic instrument.
As a side benefit, many acoustic/electric instruments also include a cut-away for easier access to the upper frets of the instrument that would be unreachable without one. Many pick-ups also include a digital tuner and small control panel for EQ, volume and other useful tone shaping controls.
