Mountain Sapphire

Named after one of the rarest of gems, Mountain Sapphire has been entertaining audiences in and around Devon since 2015.  Blending their voices into pleasing harmonies, Rochelle Sato on keyboard and John Atwood on 6- and 12-string guitar have assembled a repertoire of more than 200 popular songs, ranging from the 1930’s to present day.

The duo has performed at various events in the area, including the Summer Games in Leduc, the Relay for Life in Red Deer, the Wetaskiwin Arts Festival,  and the Devon Annual Christmas Party.  Other appearances include the Carrot Café in Edmonton, Beans Café in Wetaskiwin, the open mic in Leduc sponsored by the Turner Guitar Studio, the Newcastle Pub and dinner concerts at the Roadhouse Grill in Devon.

In March of this year, Mountain Sapphire put on a St. Patrick’s Day concert at the Devon United Church in support of the Bissell Centre.  In 2016 they organized a concert with two other groups as a fundraiser for the Syrian family sponsored by St Maria Goretti church.  Also in 2016 the band put on 2 fundraiser concerts in support of the Fort McMurray fire victims.

The group performs more than 40 times a year at various senior’s homes in Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Devon, Leduc, Lacombe and Red Deer.  As John says; “Watching an older person who is totally withdrawn suddenly come to life when the music starts is a reward in itself.”

Over the years, John has started several bands, including The Fifth Dementia in Lethbridge, The Misty Mountain Misfits in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia and J-Kat in Red Deer.  Rochelle has been singing since the age of 7 in Kiwanis festivals and church groups and in her teen years was part of a trio called Three Sing and she sang briefly with the rock group “Avant Guard”.

Featuring music from Patsy Cline to Kalan Porter and just about everything in between, Mountain Sapphire brings you “The Music You Grew Up With” and invites you to sit back, sing along and enjoy the music.
